Opportunities For Adult Learning

According to a 2000 Finnish study on adult education, almost half of the working age group is engaged in adult education. The same study establishes the fact that those who have pursued more education comprise most of those who take in further educational studies. This growing phenomenon slowly erodes the typical image of a degree earner as a young full time university student. The new breed of students, called adult learners, are typically students who are more than 25 years of age, or persons who are financially independent, who are married and have children to support, or career men and women.

There are a variety of reasons why adults would like to get those study lamps working again. Information and technology now figure prominently in almost every aspect of our lives, and because of this having a college degree is the minimum qualification standard for entry into the workplace.

Do you feel stagnant in your job? Do you need to earn a master's degree for a job promotion, or are you just shifting to another career? We ask those questions and from there we have our reasons and motivations. Take, for example, a 40-year-old full-time housewife who goes back to school to continue her unfinished degree. Or that junior executive professional who enrolls in an MBA course to enhance his chances at clinching that promotion that he's been eyeing for years.

There are so many options available to those who are planning to claim another feather on his cap. And you can choose among many educational institutions that have special learning arrangements to meet the increasing trend in adult learning. So if you're planning to take on additional learning, check out the following information to help you in choosing the course that is appropriate for you.

Types of adult education. There are basically four types of adult education: adult basic education, career and non-career related programs, credential courses, apprenticeship and the more focused foreign language learning courses.

Know what is the appropriate learning course for you. Depending on your educational qualification, or the lack of it, it is very important to determine first the course or program that is most appropriate to your educational or career qualification, or the lack of it. For example, adult basic education courses are primarily geared towards adults who, for some reason, have not earned a secondary level education or an elementary education, at the very least. This type of learning help the adult students earn the more basic level of education, such as a high school degree, for them move on to college or other post-secondary education and training.

Learning and your lifestyle. Since you are now pursuing a career, a retiree, or a busy home-based mother, you need to take on a flexible learning schedule to blend well with your other pursuits in life. Some colleges offer associate or baccalaureate programs with day and/or evening classes that are ideal for the adult working-student. To allot time for learning is not an easy task, but there's a wide range of flexible learning modules to choose from.

Distance learning. With the convenience of technology, consider taking up distance learning modules. Traditionally, distance learning has been a teacher's method of remotely providing students with access to lessons. While this is basically true today, advances in technology now allow a more dynamic and interactive distant learning. It can be done either online (Internet), or by correspondence (mail). By this method, you can make the choice on how, when and where to take your lessons and to decide your own study-support systems. For online courses, you can choose a wide array of topics, from computer skills to self-enhancement courses
